The European Commission has officially notified the countries of the South American bloc of the necessary instrument for its provisional application, which will allow the agreement to begin to be applied from May 1, 2026.

This progress follows the Council Decision of January 9 and means that the agreement will be operational between the EU and those Mercosur countries that have completed their ratification processes before the end of March. In this regard, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay have already completed this step, while Paraguay, which recently ratified the agreement, expects to do so shortly.

A new trade framework with a direct impact on the sector

The provisional application of the agreement will allow the elimination of tariffs on certain products from day one, as well as the creation of a more stable and predictable framework for trade and investment between the two blocs.

For the meat sector, this new scenario opens up opportunities, but also generates uncertainty. On the one hand, it will facilitate access to new markets and improve export conditions. On the other, it implies greater competition, especially for sensitive products, due to the entry of products from Mercosur countries.

European institutions have emphasized that sensitive sectors of the economy will be protected through safeguards, a key aspect for industries like the meat sector, which will need to closely monitor the evolution of these measures and their actual implementation.

The European Commission has made the Access2Markets platform available to companies, where exporters can consult the specific conditions of the agreement and how to benefit from it.

The European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, highlighted that this step represents “a key advance in demonstrating the credibility of the European Union as a trading partner,” and stressed that the objective is to generate new opportunities for trade, growth, and employment for European companies.

A New Stage to Watch Closely

For ANAFRIC member companies, the entry into force of this agreement marks the beginning of a new stage in international trade relations. The evolution of its implementation and its real impact on the market will be key aspects to monitor in the coming months, both for the opportunities it may generate and for the challenges it poses in terms of competitiveness.

Brussels, a Strategic Hub for ANAFRIC

In this context, ANAFRIC has strengthened its institutional presence by opening an office in Brussels, with the aim of closely monitoring these types of international agreements and defending the interests of the Spanish meat sector before European institutions.

This direct presence within the European Union will allow the association to anticipate regulatory changes, participate in sectoral dialogue, and convey the concerns and needs of its member companies at a crucial time for international trade.

You may also be interested in

The European Union has taken a decisive step towards the entry into force of the trade agreement with Mercosur.
