This strategic waterway accounts for approximately one-third of the world’s trade in these compounds, generating growing concern about the impact on food security.

The situation could translate into a significant reduction in global food production, with a particular impact on vulnerable regions such as Africa.

Faced with this scenario, the European veterinary sector is promoting a structural shift towards more resilient agri-food systems based on the circular bioeconomy. This approach proposes reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers—linked to fossil fuels—and prioritizing the use of nutrients present in organic waste, such as manure, slurry, and animal by-products.

Boosting Nutrient Recovery and Organic Fertilization

The valorization of livestock by-products and other organic waste is emerging as a strategic solution. In Spain, the application of nitrogen recovery technologies (RENURE) would allow for the recovery of between 200,000 and 400,000 tons annually, significantly reducing dependence on imported fertilizers.

This model transforms waste into resources, enabling the local production of organic fertilizers and biogas, and strengthening the sustainability of the agri-food system within the framework of the circular economy.

Livestock farming, key to the sustainability of the food system

Livestock farming plays an essential role not only as a source of protein, but also as a key element in the organic fertilization of crops. Proper management of livestock waste allows for the transformation of an environmental challenge into an economic opportunity.

Likewise, veterinary professionals play a fundamental role in the safety of the food chain, guaranteeing the control of health risks and biosecurity in the use of animal by-products.

Degraded soils and the urgent need for organic matter

The current situation is exacerbated by the state of soils in Europe, where around 60% show signs of degradation. The reincorporation of organic matter, through manure and waste, is emerging as one of the most effective solutions for restoring fertility, improving productivity, and increasing carbon sequestration capacity.

Towards More Resilient Food Systems

The current crisis highlights the vulnerability of a model dependent on external inputs and fossil fuels. The transition to decentralized systems, supported by local production of fertilizers and renewable energies such as green hydrogen, is presented as a key pathway to guaranteeing long-term food security.

The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, resulting from the conflict in Iran, is causing a significant shortage of nitrogen […]

[1097,1096
1100,3620,1125,3621
post-24657","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-anafric-en","category-sector-en","tag-anafric-en","tag-estrecho-ormuz","tag-fertilizantes-en","tag-iran
["GET
