The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on the sustainable future of the European livestock secto<\/a>r, recognizing the strategic role of livestock and the meat industry in ensuring food security, economic activity, and territorial cohesion in the European Union.<\/p>\n

The resolution, adopted on April 30, 2016, with 426 votes in favor, 119 against, and 40 abstentions, represents an important political signal of support for the sector at a time marked by challenges related to sustainability, competitiveness, and animal health.<\/p>\n

The text highlights the economic, social, and environmental importance of European livestock farming and calls for future EU policies to be based on scientific criteria and the realities of the sector. Furthermore, Parliament calls for limiting unnecessary bureaucratic burdens for farmers and livestock breeders and supporting innovation and the transition to more sustainable models without jeopardizing the competitiveness of European businesses.<\/p>\n

One of the most important points of the resolution is the defense of so-called “mirror clauses” in international trade agreements. In this regard, the European Parliament demands that products imported from third countries meet the same requirements applied to European producers regarding animal welfare, animal health, sustainability, and food safety. The aim is to guarantee fair competition and prevent imbalances in the European market.<\/p>\n

The resolution also focuses on the need to strengthen the prevention and management of animal diseases through increased surveillance, vaccination strategies, biosecurity measures, and genetic selection programs.<\/p>\n

Although it is a non-legislative text, this resolution sets the political position of the European Parliament and will serve as a basis for future initiatives by the European Commission, especially in the development of a future European strategy for the livestock sector.<\/p>\n
