September 29th marks the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), a day established by the United Nations General Assembly and co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The objective of this day is to raise awareness of the magnitude of the food waste problem and its possible solutions at all levels of society, driving collective action to achieve Target 12.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): to halve per capita food waste at retail and among consumers by 2030, in addition to reducing losses in production and supply chains.
From Europe, the European Commission actively supports this initiative and joins the global call to combat food waste. Within this framework, the EC and FAO are organizing the webinar “Driving Food Waste Reduction: The Power of Stakeholder Engagement” (September 29, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CEST), which will address the importance of partnerships and the active involvement of all stakeholders—governments, businesses, civil society, and academia—in preventing and reducing waste.
At ANAFRIC, we support this event not only every September 29th, but throughout the year. Therefore, we have a special section on our website dedicated to the latest developments in food waste (Zero Waste), both in the business and social spheres, to highlight initiatives, resources, and examples of good practices that contribute to a more sustainable food model.
