The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, has assured that Spain will maintain a firm position in defending its agricultural products in response to the announcement by the US administration of Donald Trump.
During the opening of the National Congress of Cooperatives in Palma, and according to a report reported by EFE, Planas stated that Spain intends to maintain trade relations with the United States, while also working to diversify markets with more exports to countries such as those that make up Mercosur.
The minister emphasized that, in a context of international crisis, it is necessary to support livestock farmers, farmers, fishermen, and the Spanish agri-food industry, which are fundamental pillars of the economy.
Planas also reiterated that the European Union will act swiftly, proportionally, and decisively if necessary, and that Spain has already conveyed this position to the European institutions.
In his speech, the Minister of Agriculture emphasized the need to ensure that no product enters the EU without specific authorization, and emphasized key aspects such as innovation, the proper use of water resources, and generational renewal in the primary sector.
Finally, he emphasized that, starting in 2027, a new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) will be necessary, with its own unique character and adequate budgetary allocation to address new global challenges.
