The European Parliament has sought to soften a ban on importing raw materials linked to deforestation, such as beef and soya, and backed a one-year postponement of the new rules.
The EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR), due to come into force on 30 December, aims to eliminate deforestation from the supply chains of beef, soya and other agricultural products sold in Europe, so that EU consumers do not contribute to the destruction of forests from the Amazon to South-east Asia.
The law also applies to European farmers, who will not be able to export products from crops planted in deforested or degraded forests.
The main change in the amendments is the creation of a fourth category of “risk-free” countries with very reduced controls.
