The Sheep and Goat Agri-Food Interprofessional Association ( INTEROVIC) officially presents the new Solar Grazing Center (CPSO) Annex, a technical document that consolidates the grazing model under solar installations as an example of synergy between renewable energy, extensive livestock farming, and animal welfare.
This initiative reinforces INTEROVIC’s commitment to energy innovation and animal welfare, aiming to integrate sheep farming and photovoltaic production into a pioneering model within its B+ “INTEROVIC Animal Welfare Commitment” seal.
The annex defines the requirements and evaluation criteria for farms that combine photovoltaic electricity production with livestock management, ensuring compliance with the highest welfare standards.
An innovative model for the coexistence of livestock and solar energy
The Solar Grazing Center (CPSO) emerges as a new type of center, where animals graze under solar panels, contributing to vegetation control and soil maintenance, while the facilities produce clean energy.
The implementation of extensive livestock farming on these areas will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, promote animal welfare through access to natural shade, and optimize the use of land that would otherwise be underutilized.
The new annex, developed with the technical support of experts in animal welfare and livestock production, offers a regulatory and verifiable framework for auditing these centers, incorporating specific management, biosecurity, and animal comfort parameters.
In the words of Tomás Rodríguez, director of INTEROVIC, “The new Solar Grazing Center annex demonstrates that the future of the countryside lies in integrating tradition and innovation. The sun, energy, and livestock can coexist harmoniously, generating added value for the rural environment and for society.”
A new milestone in the interovic-baie animal welfare commitment
The CPSO Annex complements the existing documents of the INTEROVIC B+ Animal Welfare Commitment certification scheme, consolidating a benchmark system in Europe for animal welfare and consumer assurance.
INTEROVIC thus continues to strengthen the reputation of the Spanish sheep and goat sector as a benchmark for good practices, innovation, and respect for the environment.
