INTERPORC highlights the commitment of the pig sector at the presentation of the ‘National Food Strategy’

INTERPORC has participated in the presentation of the National Food Strategy, held at iHub La Vega Innova in Madrid. The event was attended by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, who addressed the main challenges and opportunities of the agri-food sector in Spain.

During the presentation, the key challenges facing the sector were presented, such as food safety, sustainability, healthy eating, innovation and technology, strengthening rural areas and consumer protection. In this regard, INTERPORC has highlighted “that the pig sector is already working successfully in all these areas, reaffirming its commitment to an efficient and competitive production model”.

Sustainability, innovation and the quality of white-coated pig products “are fundamental pillars for continuing to advance towards a stronger, more transparent sector that is prepared to face the challenges of the future”.

A key sector for the Spanish economy

Furthermore, INTERPORC has positively valued the commitment of the ‘National Food Strategy’ to strengthening the agri-food sector, considering it essential for the economy and employment in Spain. In addition, it has stressed that the pig sector is a key piece in the country’s export success, contributing significantly to the almost 75,000 million euros in agri-food exports achieved in the last year.

Likewise, it has recalled that white-coated pigs are the first livestock sector in Spain, with a turnover of more than 23,000 million euros annually and generating more than 400,000 jobs, which reflects its strategic importance within the national agri-food economy as a whole.

Innovation, digitalisation and consumer protection

Among the measures presented in the Strategy, the promotion of digitalisation and training has also been highlighted, an area in which INTERPORC is already developing initiatives to improve the competitiveness of the sector. The focus has also been on consumer protection, with a reinforcement of labelling controls and an active fight against misinformation on social networks about food.
