The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, has called for dialogue to resolve the tariff conflict between the European Union and China over pork exports.
After chairing the agricultural advisory council with the professional agricultural organizations Asaja, COAG, UPA, and Unión de Uniones, Planas referred to China’s announcement to impose provisional tariffs of up to 62% on European pork imports. “We are always in favor of negotiated solutions,” the minister stated, while acknowledging the collaboration of Spanish companies during this process, according to EFE.
Along the same lines, the Interprofessional Agri-Food Association of White-Coated Pork (INTERPORC) has expressed the need to intensify dialogue between Spain and the Chinese authorities to minimize the repercussions of this measure.
Its general director, Alberto Herranz, delivered this message after participating in the meeting organized by the Government of Aragon with the regional pork sector, which was attended by the President of Aragon, Jorge Azcón; the Vice President, Mar Vaquero; and the Minister of Agriculture, Javier Rincón, along with representatives of the main Aragonese pork companies and the National Association of Pork Producers (ANPROGAPOR).
Herranz emphasized that INTERPORC and the sector associations are analyzing the effects of this provisional measure and will maintain dialogue with both the Ministry of Agriculture and the Chinese authorities.
The first objective, he emphasized, is to offer “a rapid response to the uncertainty generated among exporting companies by the new administrative requirements, which come into effect in just two days.”
INTERPORC is working with Spanish companies in the sector to clarify any doubts and ensure that trade with China resumes normally.
It should be noted that China is the main destination market for Spanish pork meat and by-products. In 2024, exports reached 540,000 tons, with a value exceeding €1.097 billion, representing almost 20% of the total exported volume and 12.5% of the value of the sector’s foreign sales.
