Mississippi, the third state to ban cultured meat

The ban, passed unanimously by the House of Representatives, carries a $500 fine and up to three months in jail for anyone who grows or sells such products within the state.

According to a New York Times article, lab-grown meat originates from cells extracted from an animal. By feeding them a cocktail of nutrients, scientists can induce their development into muscle, connective tissue, or animal fat—the building blocks of meat.

Last year, Florida and Alabama became the first states to ban the cultivation and sale of lab-produced meat, and several other states, including Nebraska and Georgia, are considering similar measures.
