ORIGEN ESPAÑA launches a project to verify the correct use of PDOs

The Spanish Association of Designations of Origin (ORIGEN ESPAÑA) has launched a pilot project for collaboration between several protected designations of origin (PDOs) and protected geographical indications (PGIs), with the aim of detecting potential fraud or situations that generate confusion at points of sale. This pioneering initiative seeks to optimize control mechanisms by leveraging existing resources in the territories where these differentiated quality foods are produced.

Proyecto pionero DO e IGP

Ten regulatory councils have been selected to participate in this initial phase, which will run over a year, beginning in April 2025. The participating councils are: Queso de Murcia and Queso de Murcia al Vino (Murcia Cheese with Wine), Guijuelo, Melocotón de Calanda, Queso Tetilla, Queso Manchego, Arzúa-Ulloa, Plátano de Canarias (Canary Islands Banana), Mussels from Galicia, Sierra Mágina, and Morcilla de Burgos (Burgos Black Pudding).

Once the year of implementation is over, the results will be presented to the assembly of ORIGEN ESPAÑA—the only organization representing geographical indications throughout the country—with the aim of assessing its possible expansion to the national level.
