Spain has permitted the export of live sheep to Algeria by ship since April 21, following an agreement reached with Algerian authorities, according to sources from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA).
Exports are only permitted by ship and for animals between 6 and 24 months old, “only for slaughter and likely only until the Feast of the Lamb, which is in early June,” according to ministry sources. The permit to export live sheep goes ahead following an agreement reached this April between MAPA and Algerian authorities on health certificates.
In terms of sheep meat and offal exports, Algeria ranked third globally in volume and second in value in 2024, as well as first outside the European Union (EU).
