Summary of food waste in Spain

Spain is once again processing the Law on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste, which seeks to address the problem of food waste.

The problem is global: in 2022, more than 1 billion meals a day were wasted in homes, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. In Spain, in 2023, more than 1.18 million kilos of food were thrown away.

EFE Agro

has summarized several private initiatives that help mitigate this waste. Too Good To Go, present in 19 countries, has prevented the waste of 25,000 tons of food in Spain in 2024, connecting businesses with surpluses and consumers through its app.

On the other hand, Coometas also facilitates the purchase of surpluses, but with a social focus, allowing vulnerable families to acquire food with the support of social entities. In 2024, it saved 26 tons of food in collaboration with more than 1,000 businesses.

Measuring and using waste
The French company Comerso, present in Spain since 2023, specializes in analyzing and reducing waste in companies. Its digital platform has managed to recover 130,000 tons of products since 2013, generating savings of 300 million euros for its clients.

In general, the new law is seen as a step forward, but with room for improvement to provide more effective tools in the fight against food waste.
