The Community of Madrid applies advanced technology in grazing to prevent and fight forest fires with the placement of GPS collars to control goats, sheep, cows and horses that feed on the grass grown in the mountains of the region.
The Madrid regional government launched this telegrazing program in 2011, which is part of the Annual Plan for Prevention, Surveillance and Extinction of Forest Fires of the Community of Madrid. Around 20,000 heads of livestock such as goats, sheep, cows and horses participate in it, feeding on the grass grown during the spring, while reducing the risk of that vegetation becoming fuel for fire.
Preventive grazing aims to recover and enhance this activity in rural areas, directing it towards priority areas for the control of vegetation and the landscape, in defense against forest fires.
