The Department of Agriculture launches a plan with 33 measures to boost extensive livestock farming throughout Catalonia

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food has presented the Action Plan for Extensive Livestock Farming 2025-2028, with the aim of strengthening this essential livestock farming model for the region. The plan includes 33 specific measures and contemplates the creation of a sector observatory for ongoing monitoring and the identification of at-risk farms, implementing specific actions to ensure their viability.

Director General of Agriculture and Livestock, Rosa Altisent.

Extensive livestock farming is key to the production of sustainable, quality food, the conservation of biodiversity, and the fight against climate change, in addition to generating a circular economy and facilitating generational renewal in rural areas.

The plan’s actions are structured into five major blocks:

Improving production and marketing

Cross-cutting support lines and sustainability measures

Wildlife management and herd protection

Training and technical advice

Assessment and monitoring of the sector

The plan also includes technical support points throughout the country, a network of agricultural schools and research centers, and the promotion of quality seals such as PGIs and native breeds. Other notable actions include aid for herd protection, support for young livestock farmers, and management of wolves and bears in at-risk areas, as well as improved compensation systems for damages.

This plan is aligned with the Catalan Food Strategy and seeks to guarantee a deep-rooted, competitive, and sustainable livestock farming model that serves the entire country.
