The Pork Sector’s Priorities in the Face of the New EU-US Trade Agreement

Last Tuesday, August 26, the Interprofessional White Coat Pork Association (INTERPORC) held a meeting with the Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, and the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, to analyze the implications that the new trade agreement announced between the European Union and the United States may have for the pork sector.

During the meeting, INTERPORC emphasized the importance of maintaining European standards regarding food safety and animal welfare and recognizing the strategic importance of the Spanish pork sector as an economic and social driver and a world leader in exports. The ministers acknowledged the importance of the pork sector for the Spanish economy and expressed their willingness to bring the sector’s concerns to the attention of EU forums.

In the words of Alberto Herranz, director of INTERPORC: “The Spanish pork sector not only leads in exports and quality, but is also an economic and social pillar in our territories. Our dialogue with the Ministries of Economy and Agriculture reinforces our commitment to working together so that the sector’s voice is present in every decision that may affect us.”
