The veggie phenomenon loses 600,000 followers in Spain

The veggie phenomenon – the sum of vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians – has slowed down in the last two years. This is what ‘The Green Revolution’ points out, a study on the veggie movement in Spain that has been echoed by Revista Cárnica.

According to this study, the veggie phenomenon had been advancing since 2017 and increased strongly during the pandemic. In 2021, 13% of the population over 18 years of age declared themselves vegetarians, while in 2023 11.4% did so, that is, 4.6 million people. This means that 600,000 people have stopped expressing their vegetarian option and that, in parallel, plant-based options have also stopped being sold on supermarket shelves, specifically 3.4% less than in 2022.
