A recent study published in the journal Ambio and reported by Interempresas analyzes the main threats facing extensive livestock farming in Spain. Researchers from several universities (the University of La Laguna, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, and the University of Zaragoza) have identified that the greatest challenges to the sector’s sustainability are high resource costs, low profitability, and adverse environmental conditions.
Based on surveys of livestock farmers, the study highlights that 78% cite socioeconomic issues, such as uncertainty about subsidies and business viability, as their main concerns. Biophysical factors are also highlighted, such as climate change and interaction with wildlife, as well as a lack of generational renewal.
The experts propose strengthening recognition of the sector, improving the quality and differentiation of livestock products, and optimizing the use of CAP funds to promote sustainability and coexistence with wildlife.
