They will introduce children to the agri-food system through books

The Generalitat de Catalunya has presented an initiative to introduce children to the agri-food sector, which is called: “A book, a seed. Read to transform”. The children from the library’s reading clubs participated in the event.

Every month, the Department will publish a recommendation for a book in Catalan for children and young people through social networks and the Agriculture website. This recommendation will be signed by the publisher and bookseller Mertxe París, who will address families, libraries and schools to introduce society to the agri-food sector through literature.

Darán a conocer el sistema agroalimentario a los niños a través de los libros

“We cultivate the land, but we also need to cultivate our knowledge. The agri-food sector needs to explain to society, with pride and a sense of belonging, what its roots, its origins are, and it also wants to make its resilience and capacity for work visible, despite all the difficulties it has to face. That is why I am very happy to launch in Ulldecona, land of ancient olive trees, a project that reminds us that culture, etymologically, is a term that comes from Latin and that originally meant to cultivate”, said Minister Òscar Ordeig.

Books that inspire and evoke respect for the agri-food sector

“Generational succession is one of the issues that must concern us most from now on. For this reason, the Government of Catalonia will give priority to all policies that are truly transformative”, said Minister Ordeig.

One of the Department’s main objectives is to scale up the generational succession strategy, highlight the professions of farmer, livestock farmer, fisherman and food producer and promote training, innovation and research to make the agri-food sector attractive to work in and, thus, strengthen the country.

Teaching guides to work on knowledge about the sector

“A child who reads is an adult who thinks and strives to be better in everything they dream of. For this reason, I firmly believe that books must also help us make the agri-food sector stronger. And is there any better way to do this than through children, families, schools and, of course, libraries like the one in Ulldecona, with intense activity and several reading clubs for children?”, he added.

The books that Mertxe París will recommend will have different themes, but all are inspired by the agri-food sector. During the presentation event in Ulldecona, París presented a proposal related to the fishing sector, which in recent weeks has made its vulnerability clear.
