The Somos Ganadería (We Are Livestock) initiative has launched a new educational video that covers the main aspects of animal welfare in the European Union, with the aim of fostering a more informed, balanced debate based on the realities of the sector.
The content is based on work developed by European Livestock Voice, which has been translated and adapted into Spanish to provide the public with a more comprehensive view of this key issue for the livestock and meat industry.
Nine key points to understand animal welfare
The video summarizes nine fundamental aspects that often go unnoticed in the public debate:
- Europe has some of the most demanding animal welfare standards in the world.
- Animal welfare is closely linked to the economic sustainability of farms.
- Small farms do not automatically guarantee better welfare conditions.
Poorly designed regulations can jeopardize the viability of family farms. - The costs of animal welfare must be shared throughout the food chain.
- Adapting farms requires time and long-term planning.
- The use of veterinary medicines must be responsible and only when necessary.
- The creation of a European labeling system can bring value and recognition to producers.
- Genetics and innovation are key to continuing to improve animal welfare in the future.
Promoting a rigorous, knowledge-based debate
These types of initiatives contribute to conveying a more comprehensive view of animal welfare, taking into account its multiple dimensions: health, economic, environmental, and social.
In a context of regulatory review in Europe, the sector considers it essential that the debate be based on scientific and technical criteria, incorporating the experience of professionals and guaranteeing the viability of livestock farms.
