Anafric qualifies the MAPA survey on sheep meat consumption. First look de global dades in Spain

According to the food consumption panel carried out weekly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Spanish households increase the consumption of sheep meat, as well as that of eggs and olive oil, from May 4 to 10. Specifically, compared to the previous week, the average consumption of sheep meat, according to the panel, has shot up 64.5% for the third consecutive week.

The Ministry has attributed this rise to the situation of confinement and the closure of the Horeca channel, with which part of what is consumed at home now stays at home “although without compensating” what was done through bars or restaurants.

In this sense, from the Anafric sheep sector we want to clarify these data: “That 65% more has been consumed in the home does not make up for the loss of 80% of the sales of the HORECA channel,” explains José Fríguls, president of Anafric. “We must analyze the data well because, as a popular saying goes, trees do not let us see the forest. By this we mean that the percentage increases are hardly significant in sheep consumption per person per year.”

You have to analyze the data well because, as a popular saying goes, trees don’t let us see the forest. By this we mean that the percentage increases are hardly significant in sheep consumption per person and year

It should be noted that the consumption of sheep and goats is very low and very parked. In the food report published in June 2019, referring to the 2018 data, it is clearly seen how its consumption in households (it seems representative to us since at the time the price panel was carried out, HORECA did not exist ) down 8.5%.

This means that if the average consumption of meat – in its entirety – was 46.19 kg per capita (person / year) in 2018, 72% of those kilos correspond to the fresh meat category *. But the specific consumption of sheep-goat meat is, according to the report data of 1.36 kg per person per year. Of which families with children only consume 0.52 kg per capita.

Therefore, when we talk about percentage figures we have to be clear about what we are talking about and compare them with the total annual figures, so that me must looking de global dades of consumption in Spain.

Of course, it is always positive to have data on an increase in the consumption of sheep and goat meat, a product with so many beneficial properties for our health and for our environment: natural meat, 100×100 sustainable, which fosters the emptied rural economy of Spain.
