ANAFRIC Takes Meat Sector Concerns to Brussels

ANAFRIC continues to strengthen its institutional activity in Brussels with a busy schedule of meetings aimed at conveying the main concerns of the Spanish meat sector regarding the regulatory, trade, and health challenges that will shape the future of European livestock farming and the meat industry.

The ANAFRIC delegation will meet today, June 9, with representatives of various political groups in the European Parliament and with institutional officials linked to agriculture, international trade, and livestock policies, with the goal of defending the interests of the beef, sheep, goat, and pork sectors.

Among the main issues on the agenda is the sector’s concern about the trade agreements that the European Union is negotiating with third countries.

ANAFRIC will convey the need for a rigorous assessment of the cumulative impact these agreements may have on sensitive sectors of European livestock production and will demand effective protection mechanisms to guarantee the competitiveness of EU producers.

Parliamentarians from different political parties

The day will begin with a meeting at the European Parliament with representatives of MEP Gabriel Mato’s team, a member of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) and substitute member of the Committee on Agriculture (AGRI). They will discuss issues related to the management of tariff quotas, the safeguard clauses included in the EU-Mercosur agreement, and the need to assess the impact of the new trade agreements on the livestock sector.

Afterwards, ANAFRIC will meet with MEP Cristina Maestre, a member of the Committee on Agriculture and the Intergroup on Sustainable Livestock Farming, who has participated in European debates on the sustainable livestock strategy and the trade agreement between the European Union and Australia.

The institutional agenda will conclude with Ester Borràs, delegate of the Government of Catalonia to the European Union.
