Changes in Eating Habits in Spain: Less Fresh Food and More Prepared Dishes

The diet in Spanish homes has changed profoundly in recent years. One of the clearest indicators of this transformation is the decline in fresh fruit consumption, which has dropped from 90.2 kilos per person in 2016 to 64.4 kilos in 2025, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA). A reduction of nearly 30% that highlights a new way of filling the shopping basket.

Cambios en los hábitos alimentarios en España menos alimentos frescos y más platos preparados

This change is due to several factors, including the rise of teleworking, new nutritional preferences, and, above all, the rising cost of food products, with a 2.9% increase in the last year (until March 2025). These circumstances are causing fresh produce to lose ground to faster and more convenient solutions.

Fresh fruit leads the decline in consumption, with a drop of more than 25 kilos per person in the last decade. But it’s not the only food that has lost ground in the diet. Fish, for example, has dropped from 14.4 to 9.22 kilos per person, and liquid milk consumption has also decreased by almost 11 liters per capita.

On the other hand, prepared meals are gaining ground. Their consumption has increased from 12.9 to 17.47 kilos per person, an increase of more than 5 kilos. This data reflects a change in consumer priorities, where speed and ease of preparation are key.
