Labeling of all meats comes into force in Germany

Since February 1, 2024, in Germany it is mandatory for points of sale to label the origin of fresh, chilled or frozen pork, sheep, goats and poultry meat that is not packaged. Until now, the regulation only applied to unpackaged beef and packaged meat.

The objective of this initiative is, according to the German minister, Cem Özdemi, that customers can support national projects and consume “German meat.” “Made in Germany” not only stands for quality, but also for stricter animal welfare and environmental standards compared to many other countries.”

The EU Commission is currently studying the possibility of extending mandatory origin labeling to other foods and the BMEL (the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food) is studying the possibility of extending origin labeling for meat in catering.
