Mercolleida brings together the Spanish pig sector in Lleida for the PronosPorc awards

Mercolleida has once again brought together the Spanish pig sector at the PronosPorc awards ceremony, which recognise the best price analysts in the Spanish pig market. The event, which this year is in its 14th edition, took place at the La Llotja Conference Centre in Lleida, attended not only by the country’s most representative pig operators, but also by the cereal sector, as well as members of local, regional and state institutions.

The winners were: Juan Pedro Florido was the winner of the PronosPorc in the Fattening Pig category, Javier Nestares was the winner of the Garrí category and Agustín Tomás was the winner of the Verra category.

Below is a summary of the categories:

Fattening Pig

PronosPorc Silver Award: Federico Beltrán, from Famadesa.
PronosPorc Bronze Award: Genís Borralleras, from Matadero Frigorífico de Aviñón.

Suckling pig

  • PronosPorc Gold Award: Javier Nestares, from Ganados Nestares.

Verra

  • PronosPorc Gold Award: Agustín Tomás, from Ganados Agustín y Josan.

The PronosPorc awards highlight the work of the best analysts in the Fattened Pig category (gold, silver and bronze), the best in the Piglet category (gold) and the best in the Sow category (gold). To choose the winners, the members of the Price Boards submit to Mercolleida each week the forecast of the price with which they believe the session will end. Those who have guessed correctly on the most occasions during the 52 weeks of the year end up being the winners. On the other hand, during the awards ceremony, the PreviPorc also takes place, a recognition to those who best predicted a year ago, during the PronosPorc of 2023, the average annual price of 2024 of the three categories of pork (Fattened Pig, Sow and Suckling Pig).

Since the PronosPorc are also an opportunity to bring together in person all the members that make up the Price Boards – the sessions combine physical attendance with telematics – it is tradition to carry out, on the same day as the PronosPorc, the relevant weekly price sessions.

Along the same lines, the Lleida market has wanted to give space to local crafts in these PronosPorc awards and, for the first time, it will be an artist from Lleida who has been in charge of making the trophies. This is Monti Mateu Costa, a renowned ceramist and sculptor with a long career, who has designed exclusive awards for this competition.
