The Asociación Cámara Costarricense de Porcicultores (CAPORC) and Mercolleida have signed this Monday, November 13, a letter of understanding to establish a market information system and be able to set a reference price for pork that reflects reality of the Costa Rican market. As a witness of honor, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Costa Rica, Fernando Vargas, has also signed.
With the market information system, it is intended to establish a Board of Operators that allows the exchange of information for the reference of quotations, as well as generating data on the pig sector based on the existing general statistics such as animals slaughtered by slaughterhouses, the number of animals sold by the producer, average weights, among others. In addition, large amounts of information will be generated, such as newsletters, statistics, among others, which are available to operators.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock participated in the signing of the letter of understanding. Vice Minister Fernando Vargas appeared as a witness of honor, and explained that “the signing of this mutual agreement will generate an instrument in Costa Rica that allows the management of markets as an alternative to give confidence to both producers and industrialists and marketers of pork. As long as there is fair trade for all parties, the whole chain will benefit. It is hoped that it will be the beginning of a successful relationship, which will be an example for other sectors”.
“It is a historic milestone for the pig sector and we are proud to be an example for other markets and industries. We are convinced that through the work route we are starting with this firm, we will generate experience and lessons learned that can be extrapolated to other sectors, resulting in a contribution for the country” said the president of CAPORC, Luis Diego Rojas .
For his part, Miquel Àngel Bergés, director general of Mercolleida, stated that it will be an enriching experience for the generation of new markets and their adaptation to the Latin American region, considering the particularities of each country. It is also an important recognition of the work carried out for years in the Lleida market, which reflects the high degree of professionalization of the Spanish pig sector.
This firm accelerates the process that has already been drawn up with the actors in the chain: producers, industrialists and distributors. CAPORC and Mercolleida have collaborated in the study of the main parameters of the pork market in Costa Rica since 2021, and have now brought this work to fruition in the signing of the letter of understanding that ratifies the mutual interest in the project This is the first time that Mercolleida “exports” its market model to another country. For this reason, it will be necessary to adapt the system of Spanish parameters to the reality and peculiarities of the Costa Rican market and to create currents of trust to agree on the participation of all the links in the pork chain in Costa Rica. Mercolleida already has users in Central and South America.
