The Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, affirmed that the agrifood chain is being essential to guarantee the supply of food and beverages to the population and it will also be for economic recovery, after the Covid-19 pandemic. He was also willing to extend the RD for the mobility of agricultural seasonal workers, which ends on June 30, until the end of September, if necessary.
Planas appeared, at his own request, in the Agriculture, Fishing and Food Commission of the Congress of Deputies, to explain the measures adopted by his department during the health crisis caused by Covid-19.
In the Commission, the minister returned to value the central role of the entire agrifood chain, as one of the fundamental pillars in this crisis, ensuring food supply, mentioning today the constitution of the Commission for the Social and Economic Reconstruction of Spain after Covid-19 in the Lower House, he stressed that agri-food is reaffirmed as a key sector in this recovery.
He also noted that in the seven weeks that have passed, from March 9 to April 26, 4.5 million tons of food and beverages have been provided for the whole of society, that is, that households have consumed more than one million tons more compared to the same period in 2019. This figure reflects the role of the sector as an essential service for the entire population and for the economy.
