The Plenary of the Deputation of Granada approved on January 26, 2023 a motion in support of extensive livestock and grazing in the province. It is an initiative of the socialist group that urges the European, national and regional authorities to recognize and compensate this activity for the application of good practices for the conservation of ecosystems.
The initiative proposes to implement a strategic plan that contributes to fixing the population to the territory, landscape conservation and combating climate change, and entails:
- Incorporate extensive livestock farming in territorial planning instruments, including protected areas.
- Implement a water infrastructure plan that allows these farms to store water.
- Clearly differentiate extensive from intensive or industrial livestock.
- Create a producer organization to improve efficiency, promote modernization, encourage scientific research or support transhumance.
