The leather industry at COP28: Recognition of the positive role of leather in mitigating climate change

Acexpiel together with 27 other international leather industry organizations, again requests the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 2023 (Dubai, November 30 to December 12, 2023) to recognize the positive impact of natural materials like leather on people, lives and their livelihoods  as a means to directly mitigate climate impact.

The Leather Manifesto exposes to COP28 delegates the ability of leather and other natural materials to make the best use of available resources and do so without diminishing them or causing harm to the environment.

The Manifesto further points out that leather is a perfect option for a sustainable future, encouraging reuse and slow fashion

«Leather manufacturing can create employment opportunities, generate wealth and security in disadvantaged regions, both directly and indirectly in related industries» states the Leather Manifesto. “Greater use of natural materials would create jobs, reduce waste and could be a direct driver of more sustainable agricultural practices.”

The Manifesto further notes that leather is a perfect option for a sustainable future, encouraging reuse and slow fashion. The leather industry once again demands appropriate environmental impact measures such as LCA, which take full account of all aspects of the production of any material and the promotion of products that are durable and can be used many times, repaired and renewed.
