Activated the temperature control plan for live animal road trips for the entire summer

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and the autonomous communities as a whole have activated until September 15, the plan of actions to control the temperature in the transport of live animals during this summer. The measures affect movements with destination both to Member States of the European Union (EU) and to non-EU countries, including road transport to the ports of Cartagena and Tarragona for export that last more than 8 hours, and transport in roll-on cargo ships bound for the Canary Islands.

Community regulations establish that in the long transfers of live animals by road (equines, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs) a temperature range of 5ºC to 30ºC must be maintained inside the vehicle, with a tolerance of +/- 5º C depending on the outside temperature. Therefore, the vehicle must be equipped with a temperature monitoring and recording system.

From June 15 to September 15, the competent authority in the place of origin will verify that the temperature forecasts during the planned trip will remain within the intervals established by community regulations. If this is not the case, it will notify the organizer that the trip planning must be modified, since trips whose forecast indicates that temperatures will exceed 35º C will not be authorized.

Temperature records

In addition, once the movement has been authorized, the competent authority will request the organizer to send, together with the return of the obligatory logbook, the temperature records made throughout the journey to verify that the temperature ranges provided for in current legislation.

As it has been carried out since 2019, this plan complements other controls carried out by the State Security Corps and Forces independently or in collaboration with the competent authorities of all the autonomous communities.
