INTERPORC celebrates Spain’s selection to host the International Pig Veterinary Society Congress (IPVS) and the European Symposium of Porcine Health Management (ESPHM) in Madrid from June 20-23, 2028. These are two of the leading events for researchers, veterinarians, professionals, and companies linked to the swine sector.
The designation, announced during IPVS 2026 last week, represents significant recognition of the relevance and leadership of the Spanish swine sector worldwide. The Interprofessional Association has played a key role from the outset, actively participating as the main partner of the bid led by the Association of Scientific Swine Production (ANAPORC), to ensure, through the collaborative efforts of the entire swine sector, that the event will be held in Spain.

Months of Work
INTERPORC’s Managing Director, Alberto Herranz, stated that “Spain’s selection is the result of months of collaborative work and demonstrates the international recognition the Spanish pork sector has achieved thanks to its commitment to innovation, sustainability, animal health, and professional excellence.”
For his part, Juan Grandía, President of ANAPORC, indicated that “hosting the prestigious IPVS World Congress four decades later is a historic milestone made possible by an unprecedented unity of the entire sector, whose strength and cohesion proved decisive in securing the bid. This unique opportunity consolidates the leadership, talent, and excellence of our pork industry on an international level.”
This idea is echoed by Miguel Ángel Higuera, Director General of the National Association of Swine Producers (ANPROGAPOR), who emphasized that “it is an honor to host and organize the world’s most important swine veterinarian congress. This challenge also carries a great responsibility, requiring everyone’s involvement to strengthen and project Spain’s brand image.”
Future Challenges
Under the motto ‘Sustainability and One Health: the swine way forward,’ the congress will bring together researchers, veterinarians, producers, companies, universities, and experts from around the world in Madrid to address the main challenges and advances related to animal health, sustainability, innovation, and the One Health approach.
The bid, led by ANAPORC, has the support of a broad range of representative entities from the Spanish pork sector, including ASICI, ANPROGAPOR, ANAVEPOR, ANVEPI, ARAPORC, FEPORCYL, VETERINDUSTRIA, ACNV, ANICE, I+PORC, INNOVACC, PORCAT, UAB, CDVE, the University of Zaragoza, Alfonso X el Sabio University, the University of Córdoba, and CEU Cardenal Herrera University.
Hosting the IPVS & ESPHM 2028 in Madrid will allow Spain to showcase to the international scientific and professional community the high level achieved by the Spanish pork industry, a leading producer in the European Union and one of the world’s main exporters. It will also reinforce Spain’s position as a benchmark for knowledge exchange, research, and innovation in animal health and production.
