Meat Detectives: From the Classroom to the Central Meat Market – An Educational Immersion into Livestock Farming and Meat Production

The Central Meat Market at Mercamadrid is once again opening its doors to children with a new edition of “Meat Detectives”—an educational initiative that, since 2017, has introduced over 1,000 schoolchildren from Madrid each year to the world of livestock farming and the production of beef and lamb.

The initiative is driven by the interprofessional organizations PROVACUNO and INTEROVIC. It takes place as part of the Madrid City Council’s “An Open Book” (*Un libro abierto*) program, hosted at the facilities of the Central Meat Market at Mercamadrid—one of Europe’s primary distribution hubs. The program is designed for students in the third through fifth grades of primary school.

Its goal is to supplement classroom learning through an immersive experience, allowing students to discover firsthand how food reaches their tables and to meet the professionals involved in that process.

During a visit lasting nearly three hours, students explore the Central Meat Market facilities, guided by specialized instructors who turn the learning process into a participatory adventure. Through various challenges, tasks, and group activities, the children investigate, observe, and solve clues to gain a better understanding of livestock farming and food production.

Learning Through Play

The program blends education with entertainment, making complex concepts accessible to children in an engaging, age-appropriate way. Throughout the activity, participants discover the economic, social, and cultural importance of livestock farming, learn about the journey of meat products from the farm to the point of sale, and explore the nutritional value of beef, lamb, and goat meat as part of a balanced diet. The games and challenges presented throughout the tour also foster skills such as observation, teamwork, and the ability to connect knowledge acquired in the classroom with real-life situations, turning the visit into a comprehensive educational experience.

Connecting the city with the rural environment

One of the primary objectives of “Meat Detectives” (*Detectives de la Carne*) is to introduce children from urban settings to a reality that, for many of them, is becoming increasingly unfamiliar: the rural environment and the people who work to produce quality food.

Throughout the day, students discover the work of professionals whose activities are essential for ensuring the food supply. They also learn about the contribution of livestock farming to the maintenance of rural areas and its role in conserving the natural environment.

The activity also focuses on aspects related to sustainability, demonstrating how grazing contributes to the utilization of natural resources, helps maintain open landscapes, and promotes biodiversity—while also playing a significant role in the prevention of forest fires.

A well-established experience

With nearly a decade of history, “Meat Detectives” has become a firmly established part of Mercamadrid’s educational offerings—a unique experience that allows students to learn, in a practical way, about the origin of food and the work of those who produce it.

The participation of nearly 1,000 students each year highlights the interest among schools in initiatives that allow pupils to learn firsthand about the origin of food and gain a better understanding of the work behind the entire production process.

With this new edition, PROVACUNO, INTEROVIC, and the Central Meat Market of Mercamadrid reaffirm their commitment to outreach and the education of new generations. They are helping to bring the livestock and meat sector closer to society through knowledge and direct experience—a point emphasized by the directors of PROVACUNO, Javier López, and INTEROVIC, Tomás Rodríguez.
