Rapid coronavirus detector for food processing surfaces, end of 2020

The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) participates in a European project to design a method for rapid molecular detection of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, on food processing surfaces.

In this project, models for SARS-CoV-2 will be identified in order to validate cleaning procedures in the food industry and a rapid diagnostic system will be implemented to detect SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses on food contact surfaces. . This automated device will be placed directly in food processing facilities, providing results in less than an hour without the need for complex instrumentation or specialized personnel. Until now, sample analysis laboratories require up to seven days.

This technology would also serve to detect other emerging viruses. Development and validation of the device will be ongoing in the coming months and partners expect it to be ready for the market by the end of the year.
