The Government of Castilla-La Mancha launched the School of Shepherds in 2022, since then, a total of 17 courses have been taught in which 304 students have participated, which has made it possible to create a pool of shepherds of more than 200 people who have obtained the qualification and the diploma and who are prepared to join the sector.
These data have been provided by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development of the Government, Julián Martínez Lizán, at the inauguration of the conference ‘The role of the Schools of Shepherds in sustainable livestock farming in the 21st century’ which was held at the Paleontological Museum of Cuenca with the attendance of representatives of schools from all over Spain and a participation of nearly 140 people.
In 2022, the regional Executive launched the School of Shepherds, whose training program is eminently practical and is aimed, in addition to promoting this profession, at settling the population, promoting generational change in livestock farming and creating new farms, promoting equality between men and women and encouraging innovation and professionalization of this activity that contributes to job creation and the conservation of the environment and rural culture.
Now, two years after its creation, these conferences have been organized to address the role that shepherd schools play in extensive livestock farming, to learn about the experiences of other communities and their problems and all this with the aim of closely understanding the world of livestock farming and grazing.
