The European Commission has presented a new Strategic Framework for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy, highlighting the key role of the agri-food sector —and particularly the meat sector— in the transition towards a more circular, resilient and decarbonised economy.
The Strategy promotes the efficient use of renewable biological resources from agriculture, livestock farming, fisheries and aquaculture, reducing reliance on fossil-based raw materials and strengthening the EU’s strategic autonomy.

The bioeconomy already represents a major driver of economic growth and employment, with a strong impact on rural areas and agri-food value chains.
A key focus of the Strategy is to boost innovation and investment, encouraging the valorisation of by-products and organic waste, and creating new opportunities in areas such as bio-based fertilisers, bioenergy and advanced bioprocessing.
The Commission also stresses the importance of ensuring the sustainable use of biomass and recognises farmers and livestock producers as essential actors in land management, ecosystem protection and climate action.
Finally, the Strategy aims to enhance the global competitiveness of the European agri-food system and support access to international markets through strategic partnerships and a more efficient regulatory framework.
