2026, International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists: recognising the value of extensive livestock systems for sustainability

The United Nations has declared 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), highlighting the importance of rangelands and the pastoral communities that manage them sustainably. Rangelands cover a large portion of the Earth’s land surface and support unique biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and food production systems.

Pastoralists play a critical role in food security, climate resilience and ecosystem management, applying traditional and local knowledge that sustains healthy landscapes and contributes to diversified, sustainable agri-food systems.

A milestone for sustainable livestock and pastoralism

For ANAFRIC and its partners in the livestock and meat sector, this International Year presents a strategic opportunity to elevate the recognition of extensive livestock systems and sustainable grazing as essential components of global sustainability. Throughout 2026, activities will focus on:

  • Sustainable rangeland management and the ecosystem services it provides.

  • Empowering pastoral communities, valuing their knowledge and role in environmental stewardship.

  • Supporting practices that enhance animal health, food security and sustainable production outcomes.

  • Promoting public policies and responsible investment in livestock systems and land management.

This global initiative also fosters dialogue among producer organisations, public institutions, scientific community and civil society, with the aim of advancing livestock systems that are economically viable, socially equitable and environmentally sound.
