ANAFRIC took part in the 9th Interovic Seminar, a key meeting for the sheep and goat sector focused on analysing the main challenges shaping its future, from generational renewal and animal health to the current political and international trade context.
One of the central themes of the seminar was the labour challenge, particularly the difficulty of ensuring generational renewal. In this regard, initiatives such as the programme promoted by the Pastores cooperative were presented. This scheme supports mentorship between farmers without successors and young people interested in entering the sector, ensuring farm continuity through a structured training and handover process.

The project led by COVAP, in collaboration with the Red Cross, was also highlighted. This initiative facilitates the employment of people from conflict-affected countries, providing both jobs and accommodation, while addressing labour shortages and supporting social integration.
Another key topic was animal health, with an overview of emerging diseases, the risk of new pathogens entering the country and the main vectors responsible for their spread. Experts stressed the importance of prevention, epidemiological surveillance and vaccination as essential tools to protect livestock and ensure farm viability.

The seminar concluded with a strategic reflection through The Sheep Compass, analysing the uncertain political and international trade environment, marked by ongoing tensions in which agri-food products are often used as bargaining tools. One statement captured the current situation: “We are not living in a time of change, but in a change of era.”

The speakers at this event were:
👤 José Luis Sáez — Deputy Director-General for Animal Health, Hygiene and Traceability (MAPA)
👤 Christian Gortázar — Institute for Research in Game Resources (IREC)
👤 José Ramón de Jesús — CZ Vaccines
👤 Horacio González — CEO of Thoffood SL
The event was closed by INTEROVIC President, Raúl Muñiz.
ANAFRIC highly values forums such as this seminar, which foster dialogue across the value chain, encourage knowledge sharing and help build coordinated responses to the challenges facing the sheep and goat sector.
