Food consumption in Spain grew again in 2025 for the first time in the last five years. According to the 2025 Food Consumption Report, presented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the total volume of food and beverages consumed increased by 0.4%, while spending rose by 3.4%, driven mainly by price trends.

One of the most noteworthy findings for the meat sector is the increase in the consumption of fresh food, especially fresh meat, whose volume grew by 1.2% compared to the previous year. The report links this trend to a greater concern among consumers for maintaining a balanced and healthy diet, based on fresh products and the Mediterranean diet.
The Ministry points out that Spanish households continue to prioritize fresh food despite rising prices and confirms that meat remains a key part of consumers’ eating habits. In fact, among the ten most consumed dishes at main meals, those containing meat predominate, such as stews, lasagnas, and other traditional recipes.
The report also reflects changes in shopping habits. Consumers are shopping more frequently, buying smaller quantities on each visit, and consolidating the supermarket as their primary shopping channel. Furthermore, there is a growing preference for products that allow for healthy eating without sacrificing convenience in meal preparation.
According to data from the Ministry, in-home consumption reached 27.047 billion kilos or liters, while each Spaniard consumed an average of 681.7 kilos or liters of food and beverages during 2025.
