PROVACUNO promotes new tools to improve sustainable manure management in beef cattle

PROVACUNO, together with Universidad Miguel Hernández and Universitat Politècnica de València, has continued its innovation project focused on improving the management and valorisation of manure from beef cattle.

After a first phase of the project, developed last year, the foundations were laid to optimise the treatment of manure, slurry and other organic by-products generated in livestock farms. This work made it possible to design an advanced agro-composting protocol that facilitates its use as a natural fertiliser, as well as the development of a digital application to help producers in its practical implementation.

One of the main findings was that not all manure has the same composition. This variability affects its agronomic value and makes it necessary to have more precise tools to quickly and reliably determine its properties and fertilising potential.

With this new phase, the project seeks to move towards even more efficient and sustainable management of these resources, helping to improve both their economic value and their environmental impact.

The work will focus on three major lines of action: expanding the manure database through new analyses, developing automated prediction systems based on NIR technology and artificial intelligence, and creating a new digital tool called OPTIMANURE, capable of recommending the most suitable fertilisation dose according to the type of manure, soil and crop.

This initiative represents an important step towards more circular and sustainable livestock farming, aligned with European goals of waste reduction and lower dependence on mineral fertilisers.

For the beef sector, projects like this strengthen the commitment to innovation applied to the field and to solutions that help improve the efficiency of livestock farms.
