The Interprofesional Agroalimentaria del Vino y el Caprino de Carne (INTEROVIC) celebrates the opening of the Philippine market to Spanish sheep and goat meat, a milestone long awaited by the sector and the result of the joint work developed over the last few years by the Spanish administrations, official veterinary services and exporting companies.
The authorization comes after an intense process of negotiation and health evaluation that has included the visit to Spain of a delegation of Filipino inspectors, in charge of verifying on the ground the systems of control, traceability, animal welfare and food security implemented in different companies in the sector. The positive assessment of these inspections has allowed the successful completion of the opening of this new destination for Spanish dairy, lamb and goat meat.

For INTEROVIC, this advance represents excellent news for the entire sheep and goat value chain, from farmers to the meat and commercial industries, as it opens up new business opportunities in one of the markets with the greatest growth potential in Southeast Asia.
“This opening is the result of the collective effort made by the sector and the administrations to guarantee the highest standards of quality and food safety. The Philippines is a strategic market that can contribute significantly to the growth of our exports and the diversification of destinations”, highlights Tomás Rodríguez, director of INTEROVIC.
A market with great potential for Spanish lamb
The Philippines has a population of more than 110 million inhabitants, an expanding middle class and a growing demand for quality agri-food products. These circumstances make the country a particularly attractive destination for Spanish sheep meat, recognized internationally for its excellence, gastronomic versatility and high European production standards.
The opening of this market will allow expanding commercial opportunities for Spanish companies, reduce dependence on traditional destinations and improve the comprehensive use of channels, generating greater added value for the sector as a whole.
Likewise, access to new international markets contributes to strengthening the profitability of livestock farms and favors the economic sustainability of an essential activity for many rural areas in Spain.
More exports, more sustainability and more future for the rural environment
The Spanish sheep sector plays a fundamental role in the conservation of the rural environment, population stabilization and the maintenance of ecosystems of high environmental value thanks to extensive grazing.
Internationalization has become a key tool to guarantee the future of this activity, allowing the growing international demand to value differential attributes such as quality, food safety, sustainability and animal welfare that characterize Spanish production.
With the opening of the Philippines, the sector adds a new strategic market to its international expansion process and consolidates the prestige of Spanish lamb in the main world destinations.
INTEROVIC will continue working to support the opening of new markets and strengthen the international presence of a product that represents one of the most sustainable livestock productions, linked to the territory and with greater capacity to generate wealth and employment in the rural environment.
