The British pork industry reduces its carbon footprint by 18% and sets its environmental strategy to 2030

The UK pork industry has taken another step towards sustainability with the publication of its new Environmental Roadmap 2026-2030, a strategic plan driven by the sector itself and supported by AHDB, the leading organization for the British agri-food sector.

The document highlights the progress achieved in recent years, notably an 18% reduction in its carbon footprint between 2008 and 2023. Furthermore, emissions related to land use and land-use change have been reduced by 71%, thanks to improvements in feed formulation, feed efficiency, and innovation applied throughout the supply chain.

The roadmap establishes seven key areas of focus for the coming years: net carbon, air quality, water management, manure and nutrient management, biodiversity, waste and recycling, and energy efficiency on farms.

The plan also includes periodic evaluations every five years using life cycle assessments, with the aim of ensuring transparency, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the results achieved.

Sustainability and reducing environmental impact continue to solidify their position as key strategic priorities for the international meat sector, driving more efficient and responsible production models aligned with climate and environmental challenges.
