Planas Calls for Cost Adjustments in the Food Supply Chain Amid Middle East Tensions

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has urged all links in the food supply chain to “adjust costs within their profitability limits” in order to avoid an increase in the final price of food, in a context marked by geopolitical instability stemming from the conflict in Iran and the Middle East.

During his remarks, Planas emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between the economic viability of businesses and consumer protection, at a time when external factors are putting upward pressure on production and distribution costs.

Direct Impact on the Meat Sector

The current international situation is generating growing concern throughout the agri-food chain, especially due to its impact on key variables such as:

  • Rising fuel prices
  • Increased logistics costs
  • Volatility in energy markets
  • Potential disruptions to international trade

In the case of the meat sector, these factors affect production, processing, and distribution, with a particular impact on refrigerated transport and export-related costs.

A Context of Pressure for the Entire Chain

ANAFRIC reiterates that the Minister’s request underscores the need for shared responsibility among all actors in the food chain.

Furthermore, the current context reinforces the importance of continuing to work on operational efficiency, logistics optimization, and the search for solutions that guarantee the sector’s competitiveness without directly passing on costs to the end consumer.

Monitoring the Situation

The evolution of the conflict in the Middle East will continue to be a determining factor in the coming months. ANAFRIC will continue to monitor its impact on the meat sector and convey the concerns and needs of its member companies to the relevant authorities.
